Oh happy day! I was recently reminiscing about my beloved Grandmama – I always think of her as autumn approaches every year. I journaled a bit about my thoughts and memories, and then crafted it into a short essay, “A Bushel and a Peck of Autumn Love.” I was pleased as punch (or apple cider?) to have it accepted into one of my favorite magazines, Halcyon Days, for the autumn themed issue.
It came out this week, and I’m so happy – the entire issue is just delightful!
I enjoy a wide range of writing styles. When I find myself feeling a bit gloomy and cold from descending too long and too far into the darker topics I’m often drawn to, I know I can rely on Halcyon Days to warm me up and soothe me.
It is a publication with an emphasis on tranquility, featuring uplifting, heartwarming poetry and prose. Even better, the pictures are sumptuous – every page is a new treat for the eyes!
Here is the full version of the poem I reference in the piece, by American poet George Cooper:
“Come, little leaves,” said the wind one day,
“Come over the meadows with me, and play;
Put on your dresses of red and gold;
Summer is gone, and the days grow cold.”Soon as the leaves heard the wind’s loud call,
Down they came fluttering, one and all;
Over the brown fields they danced and flew,
Singing the soft little songs they knew.“Cricket, good-bye, we’ve been friends so long;
Little brook, sing us your farewell song-
Say you’re sorry to see us go;
Ah! you are sorry, right well we know.”“Dear little lambs, in your fleecy fold,
Mother will keep you from harm and cold;
Fondly we’ve watched you in vale and glade;
Say, will you dream of our loving shade?”Dancing and whirling the little leaves went;
Winter had called them and they were content-
Soon fast asleep in their earthy beds,
The snow laid a soft mantle over their heads.
